The US administration has decided to impose strict restrictions on how long foreign students and journalists can stay in the US. According to the proposed changes, foreign nationals will not be allowed to stay in the US for more than four years on a student visa.

In the case of the stay of foreign journalists, it is proposed to be made only for 240 days, although it is said that even after that time, journalists can apply to extend the period for another 240 days . Chinese journalists will only get a 90-day visa.

The US currently usually issues visas based on a student's academic program or length of work as a journalist, although no non-immigrant visa is valid for more than 10 years . The proposed changes, published in the Federal Register, are open for public comment prior to implementation. Trump's "Department of Homeland Security" has accused an unspecified number of foreign students of extending their studies indefinitely. "Past administrations have allowed foreign students and other visa holders to remain in the U.S. indefinitely, creating security risks, costing taxpayer dollars and inconveniencing American citizens," the department said in a statement issued Wednesday.

According to data from the Commerce Department, the department said nothing about how international students, who contributed more than $50 billion to the US economy in 2023, hurt American citizens and taxpayers. The United States granted visas to more than 1.1 million international students during the 2023 and 2024 academic years, more than any other country. As foreign students usually pay full tuition fees, this has also contributed greatly to revenue collection .

A group of American college and university leaders has denounced the US administration's latest move as an unnecessary bureaucratic hurdle, accusing it of interfering with academic decision-making. It seems that this can further deter potential students and hinder job creation . "This proposed rule sends a message to talented people from around the world that their contributions to America are not valued," says Miriam Feldblum, president and CEO of the President's Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. The announcement comes as international student enrollments are reported to be down . However, just this week, Trump praised his relationship with his counterpart Xi Jinping and said that he would double the number of Chinese students in the US to 600,000. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also backed away from his previous commitment to "aggressively" cancel visas for Chinese students. The US State Department said last week that 6,000 student visas have been canceled since Trump took office.

Trump has also suspended billions of dollars in federal research funding to universities. The American Parliament (Congress) has also sharply increased the tax on grants to private universities . In a speech before he was elected, Vice President JD Vance made a controversial statement that conservatives should attack universities. At the end of his first term, Trump proposed to reduce the duration of journalist visas, but his successor, Joe Biden, rejected the proposal.
