Myanmar's Acting President Myint Sue died on Thursday at the age of 74. After the Myanmar military overthrew the democratic government of Aung San Suu Kyi through a 'coup', Vice President Sue was appointed acting president of Myanmar in 2021.
He was appointed Vice President from March 2016. Since his health condition was deteriorating for the past one year, he gave up all responsibilities.
After the 'coup', Myanmar's regime was assassinated by the rebel junta leader Min Aung Hlaing. But after Hlaing was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease last July, Swe was officially appointed as the 'acting president'. "President U Myint Swe passed away at 8:28 this morning," Myanmar's military said in a statement. Sue died in a hospital in Naypyidaw, the capital. Acting President Sue will be buried with state honors, the military said.
The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported on Wednesday that Swe was "admitted to hospital for intensive care after experiencing weight loss, loss of appetite and fever". Sue was previously vice president during Suu Kyi's government.
