Indian Prime Minister Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit China. According to Indian media, Modi is on his way to China to participate in the Shanghai Summit (SCO) to be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1.
This will be Modi's first visit to Beijing after the Galwan clashes in 2020. In 2020, there was a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. 20 Indian and 4 Chinese soldiers were killed in the clash. After the incident, there was a coldness in the relations between the two countries.
Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia on 23 October 2024. There was a sideline meeting between the two. It was the first formal meeting between Modi and Si after five years of the Ladakh conflict. After that meeting, efforts to improve relations between the two neighbors began. Soon after, both sides announced plans to withdraw troops from the two main areas of Ladakh, Depsang and Demchok.
In the last week of last July, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar went to China to participate in the conference of foreign ministers of SCO. It was also the first visit of the Indian Foreign Minister to Beijing after the Galwan clash. In addition to the Chinese counterpart, Jaishankar also met with the Defense Minister and the National Security Adviser.
Jaishankar arrived in Beijing the month after Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to China. Singh participated in the SCO defense ministers' meeting in Qingdao, China in May. The meeting ended without a joint statement after Indian Defense Minister Singh refused to sign it. However, both countries continued to make efforts for relations. Meanwhile, China has also opened Mansarovar Yatra for Indian citizens. Due to the Galwan clash and the Corona epidemic, China had banned the Mansarovar Yatra for Indian citizens.
