As the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Gaza worsens, the United Nations has welcomed Israel's decision to allow humanitarian aid to be sent through some safe land routes.
UN Emergency Aid Coordinator Tom Fletcher gave a positive response to this decision, saying that on this occasion, efforts will be made to deliver aid to hundreds of thousands of starving citizens. He said through social media, 'The announcement of the permission to send humanitarian aid to Gaza is welcome. Our team is trying to reach as many people as possible.'
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned a few days ago that the situation in Gaza is already very dire and is rapidly getting worse. According to Ocha, due to starvation, malnutrition and lack of sanitation, the risk of disease among the citizens is high, which can lead to death soon. According to Ocha, the limited amount of relief materials currently reaching Gaza is very low compared to the needs.
OCHA has made it clear that if Israel opens the borders for aid to enter and allows the safe operation of fuel, equipment and personnel, the United Nations will immediately speed up the supply of food, healthcare, drinking water, waste management, nutrition and temporary shelter. However, aid operations have been affected in recent days due to various blockades imposed by Israeli security forces. Out of the 15 conducted on Thursday, only five aid campaigns were successfully completed.
Ocha has recently released a comprehensive aid supply plan that can be implemented immediately in the event of a ceasefire, keeping in mind such an emergency situation. As millions of innocent civilians in Gaza are in dire straits, the United Nations has called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and keep open the way for aid.
