Why are you trying to revive the tripartite mechanism of Russia, India and China 'RIC'?

The three countries belonging to RIC occupy 19 percent of the world's land area.  The contribution of three countries to the global GDP is about 33 percent.

There are signs of reviving the tripartite mechanism called Russia-India-China (RIC), which was active in the 1990s. Russia has put forward a proposal to reactivate the mechanism, which has been inactive for several years.

Only a few days ago, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said that Moscow wants to reactivate the IC . He also said that he will talk to Delhi and Beijing about this.

In a conversation with the Russian news portal Izvestia, Deputy Foreign Minister Rudenko said, 'We will raise this issue in the conversation with both countries . We want to make this mechanism successful because these three countries are important partners. So is the founding member of BRICS.'

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has also agreed with the statement of Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Rudenko. During a media briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Qian said that China wants cooperation with Russia and India to be strengthened. He said, 'Russia-India-China cooperation is not only a matter of mutual interest of the three countries, it also helps to achieve regional and global peace, security, stability and progress.'

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has also received a positive response to this. During a regular press briefing, the spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal said, 'RIC is a mechanism where three countries discuss global and regional issues of mutual interest.' He also said that the three countries will jointly decide on the planning of the RIC meeting.

The RIC mechanism was relaxed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the military conflict between China and India in the Galwan Valley. The Galwan skirmish caused a chill in Sino-Indian relations for almost 4 years.

Last October, there was an agreement between these two neighbors to implement a new border arrangement . After that, there was a sideline meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.

It was the first formal meeting between Modi and Si after five years of the Ladakh conflict. Recently, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to China has also shown further improvement in the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

What is the RIC mechanism?
