Ukraine's finance minister and chief negotiator of the mineral deal with the US, Yulia Sviridenko, was appointed as the new prime minister on Thursday. She became the country's first new head of government after the Russian invasion began in 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the cabinet reshuffle was in an effort to reinvigorate war-weary Ukraine and boost domestic arms production to counter Russia's continued aggression.

President Zelensky will reshuffle the top government leaders, including the Prime Minister. Outgoing Prime Minister Denis Smyhl was the longest-serving Prime Minister in Ukraine's history at five years. He became the Prime Minister of Ukraine on 4 March 2020. According to the

parliamentary website, Smihl has been removed from the post of Prime Minister and given the responsibility of Defense Minister. Although other changes are expected in the cabinet, the appointment of Sviridenko as the prime minister has become a topic of discussion.

Sviridenko, who played a key role in negotiating the US-Ukraine mineral deal, has often represented Ukraine in high-level talks with Western partners. which focuses on defense cooperation, economic revival and reconstruction.

Zelensky said Sviridenko was appointed prime minister to increase domestic arms production for the next six months, fully contract all types of drones for Ukraine's defense forces, ease regulations to unlock economic opportunities, and ensure delivery of social assistance programs.

Smihl announced his resignation from the post of Prime Minister on Tuesday. He will now replace Rustem Umerov as Defense Minister. Due to the ongoing war with Russia, the responsibility of the Ministry of Defense is viewed with importance in Ukraine. Which ministry has the highest budget allocation in the country.
