Russia handed over the dead bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers on Thursday in accordance with an agreement reached last month for peace talks. After two rounds of talks between Moscow and Kiev in Istanbul, no concrete progress has been made towards a ceasefire, but large-scale prisoner exchanges and the return of the bodies of dead soldiers are underway.

"Russia has handed over the bodies of 1,000 soldiers killed during the war to Ukraine," a statement issued by the Ukrainian government said. The statement also claimed that Russia had returned some civilian fighters, including Ukrainian soldiers.

This has not been confirmed by Kiev. Russian negotiator and Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky also said that Kiev had returned the bodies of 19 dead Russian soldiers.

Although the conflict continues, due to some successful diplomatic initiatives between the two sides, the exchange of captured soldiers and the repatriation of the bodies have become possible. Despite pressure from US President Donald Trump, Russia has not accepted the ceasefire call. Russia has been reluctant to hold a ceasefire until the talks held last month include the return of more territory to Ukraine and the rejection of all Western military aid.

Kiev has called the Russian demand an "unacceptable demand" and has taken the position that it should be rejected. He also questioned the merits of further talks if Moscow was unwilling to be flexible about the ceasefire.
