US President Donald Trump has warned that he may impose 10 percent additional tariffs on BRICS countries. Trump has warned that countries that support BRICS' 'anti-American policies' will be subject to additional tariffs.

President Trump wrote on Truth Social, 'Any country that joins the anti-American policy of BRICS will be charged an additional 10 percent tariff. No one will be exempted from this.' However, Trump has not clearly disclosed his anti-American policy in his post.

In 2009, the name 'BRICS' was given to refer to Brazil, Russia, India and China and later added South Africa. Now, the process of adding partner countries to it is accelerating. The fifteenth conference held in South Africa in 2024 added Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as members. Later, Argentina decided to join the group.

from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook page Trump's warning came while the leaders of the BRICS countries were meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The BRICS countries currently account for half of the world's population, 40 percent of global oil production, and nearly 25 percent of commodity export trade. That's why BRICS is seen as a 'counter balance' of Western powers.

Chinese President Xi Jinping did not participate in this conference. For the first time in his 12-year presidency, he was absent from the BRICS summit. Similarly, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is facing a war with Ukraine, is not participating in the conference.  Similarly, due to the recent war with Israel, Iranian President Massoud Pezheshkian has not been to Brazil. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will represent Iran at the conference.
