The UK government has announced that it will buy a dozen F-35A fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear bombs from the US.

A statement released by Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office described the aircraft as "the biggest step of this generation in increasing Britain's nuclear power". Downing Street also said that with this purchase, the British army is going to carry nuclear weapons after three decades.

It is considered meaningful for Britain to buy the F-35A jet aircraft manufactured by the American company "Lockheed Martin", that too during the NATO summit. The British Air Force is preparing to carry nuclear weapons for the first time since the Cold War. After the Cold War between the United States and the then Soviet Union, which continued from 1947 to 1991, Britain deactivated its nuclear bomb capability to be dropped by the Royal Air Force.

"In today's more uncertain times, we cannot say that there will always be peace in the world, so we are investing in national  security," Prime Minister Starmer said , "These aircraft can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons." According to Aljazeera, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Military Organization (NATO), Mark Root, welcomed this announcement by the UK and responded that it was "another important contribution of Britain to NATO". This week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the NATO summit was held in The Hague in the Netherlands. According to the AFP news agency, seven NATO member states, including the United States, Germany and Italy, currently have dual-capable fighter jets that can carry both conventional and conventional weapons.
