Local media reported that a nurse was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murdering five babies and attempting to kill 8 others in a hospital in Argentina.
The nurse, identified as Brenda Cecilia Aguero, administered potassium and insulin to the newborns between March and June 2022, taking doses from an emergency medical cart. All the healthy babies died in the neonatal ward of the Maternal and Child Hospital of Córdoba province. Eight others survived due to immediate medical intervention. In the
case, 10 other defendants, including former provincial officials and health workers, were charged with cover-up and dereliction of duty. Those accused included the former health minister and health secretary of Cordoba province, as well as the former director of the hospital.
Aguero, who was arrested in 2022, denied the allegations. She accused the court of having 'no evidence against her' and the media portraying her as a 'serial killer'.
Five of the other defendants were convicted but received lesser sentences while the remaining five were acquitted.
