Rescuers reported on Saturday that 86 people died and more victims were rescued due to flooding in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa after heavy rains.

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the affected provinces on Friday and said that they are facing devastating disasters due to climate change.

It is estimated that the water in the Eastern Cape has reached a height of more than four meters due to heavy rain. It is said that thousands of houses, roads, schools and health facilities have been submerged due to floods.

The most affected by the floods and landslides was the town of Mathatha, which is near the village of Qunu, the birthplace of former anti-apartheid president, the late Nelson Mandela. The rescuers said that after the water entered the house at night, they recovered the bodies trapped inside the house and rescued the survivors.

Among the dead, at least six children and three adults are said to be in the flooded school bus. It is reported that three students who were clinging to trees on Saturday were rescued and four are still missing.

According to the Green Climate Fund, South Africa is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
