Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani passed away in an Air India plane crash. Rupani, the former chief of staff, died in the Air India flight AI-171 flight from Ahmedabad to London on Thursday. Rupani's death has been confirmed by Union Minister CR Patil.

Rupani was going to London to meet his wife and daughter. Senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunil Jakhar expressed grief over Rupani's death and said, 'Rupaniji's contribution as the Chief Minister of Gujarat will always be remembered. He was a humble, sensitive and down to earth leader.' He also says that Gujarat has lost a great leader. 

Rupani was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2016 to 2021. Before that, he was a cabinet minister in the Gujarat government. He also became a Rajya Sabha member from 2006 to 2012. Rupani was recently working as BJP's Punjab in-charge. 

Rupani was born in 1956 in Yangon, Myanmar. After the political upheaval in Myanmar in 1960, his family came to Rajkot in Gujarat. 

Indian time at 1:38 p.m. B787 Dreamliner flight AI 171 flying to London crashed after take-off. According to Air India, there were 242 passengers on the plane that crashed. Among them were 2 pilots, 10 cabin crew members and 230 passengers. Out of which 169 are Indian passengers. Similarly, Air India has informed that there are 53 passengers from UK, 7 passengers from Portugal and 1 passenger from Canada.
