According to the United Nations, the number of people forcibly displaced from their homes around the world has decreased somewhat. But the number of people displaced in an unstable manner is high, the association said on Thursday.

At the end of 2024, there is a record of 120,320,000 people forcibly displaced from their homes around the world, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR.

But after years of unrest, Syrians began to return home, by the end of April this year, that number had dropped to 122.1 million. According to the association, about two million Syrians who were displaced from abroad or from war-torn areas within the country were able to return home.

UNHCR has warned that this number may increase again due to major conflicts worldwide. "The number of people displaced by war, violence and oppression around the world was unbearably high. We are living in a time of intense instability in international relations, modern warfare is creating an acute, dire scenario of human suffering," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

He said that efforts to find a long-term solution for others who want permanent peace and are forced to leave their homes should be redoubled.

According to UNHCR's annual Global Trends Report, the main reason for displacement is the large-scale conflicts seen in countries like Sudan, Gaza, Myanmar and Ukraine. The report said the number of Syrians returning home increased in the first month of this year.

By mid-May, more than 500,000 Syrians are estimated to have returned to the country since the fall of Assad. While an estimated 1.2 million internally displaced persons have returned to their areas of origin since the end of November.

By the end of 2025, it is estimated that 1.5 million Syrians from abroad and 2.0 million internally displaced people will return to their original land. Sudan is now one of the world's most forcibly displaced countries, with 1.43 million refugees and internally displaced people. Compared to this, the number of Syria is 13.5 million. Then there are 13 million in Afghanistan and 88 million in Ukraine.

, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Ukraine, peace, or at least the end of fighting, the United Nations estimates that all these refugees will help in solving their problems. If we look at the number of displaced people so far, Iran has sheltered the most 3.5 million refugees. Similarly, 2.9 million refugees are in Turkey and 2.8 million are in Colombia.

2.7 million are taking shelter as refugees in Germany and 1.8 million in Uganda.
