A curfew has been announced in the downtown area of Los Angeles in the state of California after protests against the immigration policy introduced by President Donald Trump's administration intensified.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew in the downtown area after showing no signs of abating for the fifth day on Tuesday. According to the American media, Mayor Bass has announced a curfew to be effective from Tuesday night.
"Since the ongoing protests show no sign of abating, a curfew has been announced to be enforced in a 1 square mile area of downtown Los Angeles to prevent further damage and to create a situation where the protests will be peaceful," Mayor Bass said at a press conference, "The curfew will be strictly enforced from Tuesday 8:30 p.m. to Wednesday 6:00 a.m. local time." During the protest, she informed that 23 business firms were robbed in the downtown area on Monday night alone.
The total area of the city of Los Angeles is 522 square miles. Out of that curfew will be applied only in 1 square mile area. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said the curfew is necessary to save lives and protect property, according to CNN.
"We have been forced to take this step due to the increasing unrest and illegal, dangerous activity in the city over the past few days," said Police Chief McDonnell. The police have so far arrested 197 protestors. 114 of them were arrested on Monday alone.
