Demonstrations continued on Monday in Manipur state of northeastern India, which has been in turmoil since Saturday night. According to Indian media The Hindu, on Sunday night, protesters violated the prohibition order and there were incidents ranging from burning government buildings to clashes with security personnel. They also took out a spice procession at night.
Demonstrations started in Manipur on Saturday night after the arrest of Kanan Singh, a prominent leader of the Maitei caste volunteer organization 'Arambai Tengol-AT' and five other leaders. After the demonstration started, the administration Internet service has been shut down for five days in five districts of the state with effect from Saturday night. A curfew has been issued in one district and prohibitory orders have been issued in four other districts prohibiting people from gathering and demonstrating.
Protesters set fire to the sub-divisional collector's office in Imphal East district on Saturday. It is said that the building was partially damaged by the fire and government documents were burnt.
Protesters have blocked the road by piling mud on Kayan road. Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in Kwakeithel and Singjamei in Imphal West district and police fired dozens of rounds of tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, security officials said.
