Brazil urges the United Nations to play a leading role in Russia-Ukraine peace efforts

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called on the United Nations to take initiative to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He suggested the United Nations to proceed by forming a group to find a solution to the problem.

After French President Emmanuel Macron said this week that Brazil has an "extremely important role" in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Lula sought the leadership role of the United Nations during his visit to France. After the first round of Istanbul talks between Russia and Ukraine failed to end the more than three-year conflict, the second round of direct peace talks began this week in Istanbul.

Calling United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres a "good man," Lula said at a press conference, "The United Nations can become a hero again to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine." They will listen to each other's reality and then discuss options and proceed to peace efforts. He also said that he would like to propose the formation of a commission consisting of countries not involved in the war to negotiate with Zelensky and Putin.

said, 'It is not possible for any side to get what they want through war, but what is possible to get is only possible through negotiation. Neither the war results are 100% on Zelensky's side, nor is the atmosphere comfortable on Putin's side.'

President Lula, who is set to host another summit of the BRICS group in Rio de Janeiro in July, said Putin was invited to the meeting despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for illegally deporting Ukrainian children to Russia. Similarly, Russia accused Ukraine on Saturday of suspending a large-scale exchange of captured soldiers.
