Exit polls have predicted that Lee Jae-myong of the opposition Democratic Party will get more than 50 percent of the votes in the presidential election in South Korea.

Kim Moon-soo of the ruling People Power Party said  It is also projected that he will be behind by about 39 percent of the votes.

Former President Eun Suk Yeol was impeached and suspended from office after declaring martial law, blocking civilian rule.

Al Jazeera has mentioned that the counting of votes is continuing across the country and the winner is expected to be clear by the time 70 percent of the votes are counted around midnight local time. 79.4 out of the total voters have voted in this election. It was the highest turnout in a presidential election since June 1997.

The BBC writes that the challenge for the new president is how to coordinate with businesses worried about US tariffs and uncertain allies like Donald Trump.
