Monsoon outbreak in Indian Northeast states: At least 32 dead in last 24 hours

At least 32 people have lost their lives in the northeastern Indian states of Assam, Arunachal, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland due to floods and landslides caused by continuous heavy rains.

According to the Economic Times, the monsoon that entered southern India last Saturday and reached the northern part of neighboring Bangladesh and Meghalaya has caused a significant amount of property damage in the last 24 hours.

The state of Assam has been affected the most. News agency Annie has written that 8 people have died in Assam in the last 24 hours due to flash floods. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, two people including a child died in Golaghat district, one person died in Lakhimpur district and 5 people died in Kamrup district due to landslides.

Two other people from Kamrup were injured in the landslide. 58 thousand 91 population of 175 villages in 12 districts including Dhemaji, Dakshin Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugah, Golaghat, Darrang, Nagaon, Karvi Anglong, Kamrup, Vishwanath, Tinsukia and Karbi Anglong West have been affected due to heavy rain. 

Around 792 hectares of arable land has been flooded. 194 livestock have been swept away. 75 thousand 918 livestock are affected due to flood.

About 7,000 of the affected locals are taking shelter in temporary relief and rescue camps arranged by the district administration.  

In the past 24 hours, 22 road networks, one bridge, seven dams, irrigation canals, school buildings and Anganwadi centers have been damaged due to flooding. 

Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning to the administration and officials of all states to be on high alert in these states.
