Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has also asked people living in river and low coastal areas to be cautious. According to a report published by the Emergency Management Authority of Assam on Saturday night, 175 villages in 12 districts of Assam have been flooded. Due to the continuous heavy rain since Friday, life has been affected as most parts of Sikkim in India have been submerged. According to local media, the flood has washed away various roads in North Sikkim. According to the Mangan police, 1,350 tourists are getting trapped in Lachen and Lachung alone.
The police said that because the highway itself was damaged by the flood, it was difficult to rescue them. Due to continuous rains, the water level in Teesta river has also increased and the only belay bridge connecting Mangan and Chungthang has also been damaged. According to Himalaya Darpan published from Siliguri, the eight tourists and the driver who went missing in a road accident in Munsithang between Chungthang and Lachen are yet to be found. The police said that the search for them is continuing.
Two people were rescued and sent to a hospital in Gangtok for treatment after a car accident and got stuck in Bhir, the police said. The missing tourists are from Odisha and West Bengal. In Assam too, road transport and rail services have been disrupted due to continuous heavy rains.
