More than 100 people have died due to flooding in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials told AFP on Saturday.
Regional official Bernard Akili told AFP that the flood that occurred in the village of Kasaba in South Kivu province on Thursday-Friday night due to torrential rain caused extensive human damage as well as material structures.
Due to torrential rains, stones, big trees and mud from the Kasaba River in the night were washed away to form a lake in the river and the houses on the banks of the same lake were destroyed.
Regional Administrator Sami Kalonzi has said that at least 104 people have died due to the flood and there has been extensive material damage.
Another local resident told AFP that 119 bodies have been found by Saturday.
A local humanitarian aid worker told AFP that there is no internet service in the village, which is located on the edge of Lake Tanganyika and can only be reached from the lake.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially in the east, such natural disasters are frequent.
In 2023, about 400 people from various communities on the shores of Lake Kivu in South Kivu Province died due to floods.
