Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the first American Pope. He will now be known as Pope Leo XIV. After being elected Pope on Thursday, Leo gave his first address to thousands of spectators from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. He called for peace and paid tribute to the late Pope Francis.

Born in Chicago, USA, Leo is 69 years old. He spent most of his time as a missionary in Latin America. He is a citizen of both America and Peru. He served as a bishop in Peru. He previously led the influential 'Vatican Office' in the appointment of bishops. The previous Pope Francis died last April at the age of 88.

After the Pope's election, world leaders congratulated him and expressed their readiness to cooperate with the new Pope on global issues. As he is the first American priest to lead the Roman Catholic Church, US President Donald Trump called this historic selection a great honor for the country. Just Saturday after Trump posted an AI-generated photo of himself as the Pope on social media  Catholics objected .
