The leader of Germany's Conservative Party, Friedrich Merz, has failed to secure the necessary majority in the parliamentary vote for the chancellor.
He got only 310 votes out of the 316 votes needed to become the chancellor. There are 630 members in the German parliament, the Bundestag. Germany's federal election two and a half months after winning the result of the vote, the merger has received an unexpected shock.
His coalition with the centre-left has enough seats in the MPs needed for the chancellor . But 18 MPs who are expected to support him have disagreed.
The failure of the merger in the first vote is considered unprecedented in modern German history. The Bundestag will now have another 14 days to choose a merger or another candidate as chancellor .
