Eight men have been arrested in two separate investigations carried out by anti-terrorist police in the UK. The Metropolitan Police said that five people were arrested in various places in England on Saturday during the investigation of the conspiracy to 'target specific areas'.

According to the police, two of those arrested are 29 years old and 40 and 46 years old. It is said that the nationality and age of another person are yet to be revealed. Likewise, in a separate police investigation, three other Iranian men were arrested in London on Saturday. The police said that these two actions are not related.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has thanked the police and security services for their 'action to keep the country safe'. "These are serious incidents that demonstrate the need for our response to national security threats," she told the BBC.

Five men have been arrested and four have been detained under the Terrorism Act. The fifth person has been arrested under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE). All five people have been arrested on suspicion of preparing for terrorism. They were arrested in Swindon, West London, Stockport, Rochdale and Manchester.

Police say they are investigating a suspected plot to target 'specific premises'. The police did not mention anything about the 'affected place'. But the police have informed the concerned and are providing necessary assistance.

The investigation was led by the Met's Counter-Terrorism Command. Greater Manchester and Wiltshire Police and counter-terrorism officers from across the country assisted in the investigation. "The investigation is still at an early stage and we have widened the scope of the investigation to further identify those who may be at further risk to the public involved in this matter," said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met's Counter-Terrorism Command.

The men arrested in another operation are 39, 44 and 55 years old. They were arrested under the National Security Act from three separate addresses in North-West London and West London. The police said that this investigation is not related to the arrest of five people.
