In Australia, the ruling Labor Party has won the election held on Saturday. With the victory, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will become the Prime Minister for another three years. Peter Dutton, leader of the main opposition Liberal Party, has been defeated in his own constituency.
After the victory, in the event held at the party headquarters, Albanizi said that this victory belongs to all Australians. He said his main purpose and agenda is and will continue to be focused on the Australian people. Albanizi said that Labor will be the government of all Australian people in the event attended by various party leaders and their families. He said that the people have made an important decision by giving Labor a victory again.
Dutton, the leader of the opposition party who was defeated in his own constituency, has apologized taking responsibility for the defeat. After losing the election, he will not be the leader of the party. He said that he has called the Prime Minister and congratulated him. Dutton said that he is working and will continue to understand the heart and desires of the Australian people.
Australian politics is dominated by the Labor and Liberal coalition. Along with these two parties, the third largest party Green and other small parties and independent candidates competed in the election. In this election, the incumbent Prime Minister Albanizi has won easily, while the opposition leader Dutton has been defeated by the Labor candidate Ali France . Dutton was elected from that constituency for more than two decades.
Australia's lower and upper houses voted for 226 seats. Voting was held on Saturday for 150 seats in the lower house (Legislative Council) and 76 seats in the upper house, the Senate. According to the Australian news agency ABC, Labor is ahead in 85 seats while the Liberals are ahead in only 39 seats. Apart from Labor and Liberals, independent candidates are ahead in 11 places.
During the nearly 5-week-long election preparations and campaigning, both Labor and Liberals prioritized various pro-people issues including health, immigration, rising costs, and mental health. Recently, even after Donald Trump was elected as the President of the United States, the parliamentary elections in Australia were watched with interest. This defeat in the Australian election is said to be the worst defeat of the Liberal Coalition. The Liberals have even lost some of their seats.
In the previous term, Albanizi became the Prime Minister after defeating the leadership of the then Liberal Coalition leader and Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Due to the process of counting the ballots, all the results of the election have not yet come. The media has claimed that Labor will win a majority.
Voting is mandatory in Australian elections and there is a rule to fine voters who do not vote. In this election, about 8.5 million people had already voted before the election day. In order to facilitate the voting, voting was arranged by post a few days ago, and the citizens who are outside the country were also given the right to vote.
