After the party won the federal election, Carney's comments did not allow Trump's wish to merge Canada with the United States.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party won the Canadian federal election on Monday. After the victory, Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada will never bow to the US.
After his Liberal Party won the federal election, he made these comments targeting President Trump, who said he would make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
Prime Minister Carney said that the US is trying to seize its land, resources, water and country, and said, 'We will never and never allow such a wish to be fulfilled.' Former central bank governor Carney previously said that President Trump's leadership had ushered in "dark days" for Canada.
Trump has repeatedly talked about tax hikes that would merge Canada with the US and disrupt bilateral trade that is the lifeblood of the Canadian economy. The leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, has also lost his parliamentary seat.
Losing a seat in his own constituency in the capital, Ottawa, has been seen as a political downward spiral for Poilievre. Until a few months ago, he was considered a certain candidate to become the future Prime Minister of Canada. Just like Trump decided on the election slogan as "America First", Poilievre promoted the slogan of "Canada First" in the election.
India and China willing to improve relations with Canada
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on Tuesday and expressed hope that relations between New Delhi and Ottawa will be restored.
"We look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and open up more opportunities for our people," Modi said in a statement. Earlier, relations between India and Canada deteriorated after the Ottawa administration accused New Delhi of involvement in the killing of a Canadian Sikh. India has been denying the allegations.
Canada has the largest Sikh community after India. Where there are activists of "Khalistan". Khalistan is a separatist movement seeking an independent state for religious minorities in Indian territory.
Ottawa also accused India of killing 45-year-old Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver in 2023 and targeting Sikh activists associated with the movement. India has consistently denied the allegations.
The debate went as far as both countries expelling each other's top diplomats. Due to these latest developments, the bilateral diplomatic relations are getting worse and worse, Indian Prime Minister Modi has tried to restore relations with Canada through his counterpart Carney.
Likewise, China has also said it is open to improving relations with Canada following the victory of Prime Minister Carney's Liberal Party. "China is willing to develop relations with Canada based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun.
Relations between Beijing and Ottawa have also been strained in recent years. In December 2018, following the arrest of a senior Chinese telecommunications executive on a US warrant in Vancouver, Beijing retaliated by detaining two Canadians on espionage charges.
Similarly, the relationship was further strained after allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian elections in 2019 and 2021. Beijing has denied the allegations of interference. Sino-Canada relations soured after Ottawa criticized the tightening of security in Hong Kong and the treatment of China's Uyghur Muslim minority community.
After China executed four Canadian citizens just a few weeks ago, Beijing made a new proposal to improve relations after Carney's re-emergence as prime minister.
