At least 9 people were killed in the missile and drone attack by the Russian army in the Ukrainian capital Kiev last Wednesday. The BBC reported that 77 people were injured in the attack, citing Ukrainian officials. Similarly, two people were killed in the attack in Kharkiv.

Vitaliy Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said that the injured are being treated at the hospital. According to him, six of those taken to the hospital are children. "Due to the attack, six places were on fire," he said. According to Klitschko, 31 of the injured are being treated in hospital. He said that 12 buildings were damaged in the attack and some people were trapped in the rubble. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said "a phone call was heard from the rubble". He said that the Russian army attacked other areas including Sumi and Zhytomyr. But he says that Kiev is the most affected.

Similarly, the mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, has also said that the Russian army attacked the north-eastern Ukrainian city. He said there were 24 attacks in Kharkiv, including 14 drones and 10 missiles. According to Terekhov, one of the missiles hit a heavily populated area and killed two people. According to him, a hotel, a school building and other infrastructure were also damaged.

Wednesday's attack is the deadliest in the Ukrainian capital since July 8, 2024. 34 people were killed in the attack on civilian infrastructure including Okhmatdit Children's Hospital. 121 people were injured in the attack. In recent times, the Russian army has increased its attacks against the infrastructure centers of Ukrainian citizens. On April 4, 21 people lost their lives in the attack in Krivi Rih. The April 13 attack killed 35 people in Sumi. Similarly, 9 people were killed in an attack on Marhanets on April 23. The Russian military has not commented on the attack. But Russia said on Thursday it intercepted 87 Ukrainian drones. Russia claims that two of them were shot down in the Moscow region and 45 shot down in Crimea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that 64 missiles and more than 150 drones were attacked in Ukraine overnight. Among those hit, 11 were ballistic and 55 were cruise missiles, he said. Saying that the attack on Ukraine should be stopped immediately, Zelensky said that he is grateful to the world community that stands with Ukraine. "The attacks must stop immediately and unconditionally," Zelensky said.

Zelensky has shortened his tour schedule to South Africa. On the social network X, he mentioned that he met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and immediately cut other schedules to return to Ukraine. In that regard, President Ramaphosa has confirmed that he has recently spoken with US President Donald Trump about the peace process in Ukraine. He said he and Trump both agreed on ending the war as soon as possible. "The Ukrainian Foreign Minister will hold all necessary meetings in South Africa to fully inform the political and civil society leaders of the country about the latest situation," he wrote.

Previously, US President Trump criticized President Zelensky's approach to peace talks. After Zelensky insisted that Ukraine would not accept Russia's annexation of Crimea, Trump said the comments were "very damaging to peace talks". "He can get peace or he can fight for another three years before he loses the whole country," Trump said. "Zelensky's statement today will do nothing but prolong the killing zone." Russia is accusing Kiev of attacking energy infrastructure and "disrupting" the Easter ceasefire.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that "Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is completely unable to comply with the agreements". He says that the Ukrainian army is a "gang of neo-Nazis and mercenaries".
