On Saturday, thousands of people took to the streets across America to protest the recent actions of US President Donald Trump. 50501 known as '50 Protests, 50 States, 1 Movement' was held to mark the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolutionary War.
Protesters expressed various complaints outside the US presidential office White House and Tesla car dealers and in the center of many cities. Demonstrators demanded the return of Kilmarn Abrego Garcia to America. Some of the protesters gathered at the White House to criticize Garcia's ouster, CNN reported. They say that Trump can easily pressure El Salvador to bring him back. A protester standing in front of the White House held a placard with the slogan "Export Trump to El Salvador".
Garcia, who was mistakenly deported from the US, has been sent to El Salvador. In the latest Gallup poll, 45 percent of American voters approve of Trump's performance in the first quarter of his term. This is 3 percent more than the same period in his first administration . All US presidents elected from 1952 to 2020 have at least 60 percent approval of their first three-month performance. In this sense, Trump has become the weakest president in history.
President Trump's popularity seems to be decreasing lately. Trump's economic policy is the main factor for this. When he took office in January, his approval rating was 47 percent, according to Gallup. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed his approval rating falling to 43 percent from 47 percent. Only 37 percent of voters approved of his actions on the economy in the poll.
The participants in the demonstration on Saturday protested some of the recent decisions made by the Trump administration. In particular, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOJ) initiative to cut government jobs and other expenses and the Trump administration's neglect to bring back El Salvador citizen Kilmar Abrego Garcia raised a loud voice.
Last month, the Trump administration sent 260 Venezuelans and El Salvador citizens, including Garcia, to the notorious mega-jail Secot (terrorist detention center) in the Central American country of El Salvador. Claimed to be members of Venezuelan criminal gangs, they were sent to mega-prisons using the 'Alien Enemies Act' of 1798.
The act gives the US president the power to detain and deport nationals or citizens of "enemy" nations without due process. The 'Alien Enemies Act' had only been used in the US three times before during the war. The last time the Act was used during World War II was to imprison people of Japanese descent without trial and send thousands to internment camps.
Since taking office in January, Trump's radical immigration policy has faced several legal hurdles. Trump has been accusing the Venezuelan "Train de Aragua" group of attacking, infiltrating and threatening US territory. According to CBS News, 137 of the 261 Venezuelan citizens sent to El Salvador as of April 8 have been deported from the United States under the Alien Enemies Act. But the US court on March 15 temporarily stopped such deportation.
A judge in the state of Maryland ordered him to be brought back, saying that the Trump administration had wrongly deported him. The Supreme Court last week partially upheld a ruling by Judge Paula Sinis ordering authorities to facilitate his release after the government called his deportation an "administrative error". But Trump officials are continuing to push against the order. The President of El Salvador, Naib Bukele, has also said that Garcia will not be allowed to return to the United States. Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, who met Garcia earlier, said that after the court order, he was transferred from the mega prison to another prison .
The US government has admitted that it mistakenly deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a citizen of El Salvador. The government has been claiming that he is a member of the 'MS-13' gang. But his lawyer and family have refused. Abrego Garcia has never been convicted of a crime.
The Supreme Court initially ruled on April 8 that even though President Trump can use the "Alien Enemies Act" to deport members of the gang, the court's decision mentions that they should be given a chance to challenge before deporting them. In his inauguration speech in January, President Trump pledged to "eliminate the presence of all foreign gangs and criminal networks that bring destructive crime to American soil."
US media reported that Saturday's demonstration was generally peaceful. But in a video posted by Democrat leader Suhas Subramaniam on social network X, he is seen carrying a Trump sign and pushing the crowd from the middle. Some protesters even carried placards reading 'No Kings' as a sign of the anniversary of the beginning of the country's revolution against British rule. People carried similar placards during anniversaries in Massachusetts commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord and Paul Revere's famous horse ride . "50501" was performed in Boston on Saturday.
With Trump starting his second term, political protests have become common in America. Tens of thousands of people participated in the ``Hands Off'' demonstrations across America in early April. Protests were held in 1,200 locations in all 50 US states.
