Four students were injured in the shooting at Wilmer Hutchins High School on Tuesday. After the incident, the police arrested a suspect.
The Dallas Independent School District released a statement Tuesday evening announcing the suspect's arrest. However, no further details were given in the statement .
According to ABC News, at first this incident was a fight between students . There was no active attacker entry . All the four injured students have been admitted to a nearby hospital. Dallas ISD Police Department Assistant Chief Christina Smith said they are being treated, although she did not elaborate on their condition.
Smith said at the press conference, "This investigation is very new for now, so the information about what caused the shooting has not been received yet."
According to her, the gun used did not come from the regular school entrance process. She said, "It was not a weakness of our staff, systems or scan machines." However, she did not elaborate.
As a student told local media Wafa, he was in the hall during lunch when he heard gunshots . He then hid in the band room after seeing students running and screaming.
Videos taken after the incident show students being evacuated from the school, and police and fire engines arriving at the scene .
The school has been secured and the public has been asked to stay away from the campus.
Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde informed that all students have been reunited with their parents . After the incident, the school will be closed for the rest of the week and mental health counseling services will be provided, she said.
She said, "Today we all had to face an unexpected and sad time". This is happening again and again, which should not be normal.'
Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed his condolences to the victim and said that he would provide the necessary assistance to bring the culprits to justice. He said through the social network X, "We are saddened by the incident of inhumane violence at Wilmar Hutchins High School."
