Peru's President Dina Boluarte has halted preparations for impeachment in parliament on charges of illegally receiving a "Rolexgate" watch as a gift.
The parliamentary investigation sub-committee found that there is no truth in the accusation that he took the watch as a gift (bribe) illegally, but that the watch was bought by a friend of the president for payment, and protected him from the corruption charges and the proposal to face impeachment.
Along with this, the Peruvian Congress has stopped the corruption investigation against him. The sub-committee, hearing the allegations, recommended on Friday that the case be dropped, which could further worsen the deep unpopularity of the President.
When the 62-year-old Boluarte leaves office in July 2026 and loses his presidential immunity, he may still not be acquitted in this case.
In March 2024, the so-called 'Rolexgate scandal' started after the discovery of an undisclosed cache of expensive Rolex watches and jewelry belonging to the President.
Bouluarte told prosecutors that the watches were bought by a friend for money, but the attorney general presented formal charges to Congress as property acquired through bribery.
support The president, whose approval rate is in the single digits, has no party or leadership in parliament, but has the support of the ruling conservative parties.
She has faced a separate investigation into two weeks of unannounced absence in 2023 for a nose job, which she said was for medical treatment rather than cosmetic purposes.
Peru has been going through political instability for a long time and there have been six presidents in the last eight years.
In December 2022, Boluarte took office replacing leftist President Pedro Castillo. She was Castillo's vice president. The next presidential and legislative elections in Peru will be held in April 2026.
