A part of the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, the only operating hospital in Gaza, was destroyed in an airstrike by the Israeli army on Sunday. Quoting eyewitnesses, the hospital's intensive care and surgery departments were destroyed due to the attack, BBC said.
In a public video on social networks, a large fire and smoke can be seen after the missile hit a two-story building. In the video, some patients and other people in hospital beds can be seen running away from the scene.
The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has claimed that the hospital was attacked because the Palestinian group Hamas' "command and control" center was operating.
A local journalist in the hospital said that the IDF called a doctor working in the emergency department and told him to evacuate the hospital immediately. "All the sick and displaced people should go to a safe distance," said the official, "it's only 20 minutes to get out." The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem affiliated with the
hospital said that a child died of a head injury as people had to be rushed out of the hospital. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said the hospital building had been completely destroyed. According to the ministry, patients and hospital staff had to be shifted to other places after the attack.
