As senior Palestinian leaders hold talks with Egyptian mediators in Cairo on Saturday, Hamas expects "real progress" towards a ceasefire agreement to end the war in Gaza, an official involved in the talks said.

Amid the ongoing violence in Gaza, talks between Hamas and Egyptian mediators were held in Cairo. A few days after US President Donald Trump said that an agreement was close for the release of hostages in Gaza, the two sides are engaged in talks.

A Hamas official told AFP that the Palestinian group expects significant progress from the meeting with the Egyptian mediator. "We hope that the meeting will make real progress towards an agreement to end the war, stop the attacks and ensure the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza," said an official close to the ceasefire talks.

The Hamas delegation is led by Khalil al-Haya, the chief negotiator of the group. Although it is mentioned in the Israeli media that Israel and Egypt have exchanged drafts of a possible ceasefire and hostage release agreement, Hamas has not yet received a new proposal for a ceasefire. "Contacts and discussions with the mediators are continuing," he said, "Israel is continuing its attack on Gaza." It is affecting the atmosphere of negotiations.' The Times of Israel reported that eight dead bodies will be handed over. President Trump said at the cabinet meeting this week, 'We are getting close to bringing back those held hostage in Gaza.'

Trump's Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff quoted the Israeli media as saying that 'a serious agreement is taking shape and it will be finalized in a few days'. Israel ended the two-month-long ceasefire with Hamas and resumed its attack on Gaza on March 18. Since then, more than 1,500 Palestinians have died, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
