At least 33 people have died due to heavy rains and floods in the capital of Congo, Kinshasa. In an attempt to protect themselves, local residents are leaving for safe places.

Officials say at least 33 people have died in Kinshasa due to heavy rains and floods. Many houses in western Kinshasa were washed away by floods after heavy rains from Friday night to Saturday morning. 

17 million people live in the city of Kinshasa, located on the banks of the Congo River. This river is one of the largest rivers in the world which spreads across the country. Although floods in the Congo River are common, President Felix Tsisekedi himself has warned that due to climate change, floods have become more frequent and dangerous in recent years. 

26 districts of the capital have been affected by floods. Poor slums and the outskirts of the city have been most affected.  According to a local, water up to one and a half meters  has reached

"We have escaped with our lives, but many things are trapped inside the house," it was mentioned in the AFP news agency, quoting the locals. Many locals have accused the government of being slow to respond and not providing enough support. They are expressing anger towards the government.
