4,000 killed in US shootings in 10 years

The Las Cruces police in the state of New Mexico, USA, arrested a 15-year-old teenager last Monday afternoon for being involved in the shooting. Police allege that he was involved in a shooting that killed three people and injured 14 others in New Mexico on March 20.

The police have detained three people including the teenager for their involvement in the incident. According to information released by Las Cruces police through a Facebook post, two 19-year-olds and a 16-year-old youth died in the shooting.

Every day in America, such incidents are happening in some state. In the three months of 2025 alone, 53 shootings have been made public in America. According to Gun Violations Archive (JVA) data, 18 people died in mass shootings in January, 22 in February and 14 in the third week of March. 242 people were injured in that incident. It is reported that 98 people were injured in January, 57 in February and 87 people were injured till the third week of March.

In America, 4,000 people have died in shootings in the period of 10 years and 2 months from 2014 to 2025 February. According to JVA data, 4,200 people died in 5,236 shootings during that period. JVA noted that these incidents occur more in public parks, bars, communities, festivals, commercial areas, schools. 292 in 2014, 281 in 2015, 399 in 2016, 299 in 2017, 276 in 2018, 406 in 2019, 438 in 2021, 413 in 2022, 422 in 2023 and 54 people died in shootings till the third week of March 2025.

According to GVA data, there has been an increase in mass shootings after May 2020 compared to previous years. As mentioned in the JAMA Open Network Journal, while analyzing the GVA data from April 2020 to July 2021, the researchers noted that the number of shootings in July 2020 was twice as high as the previous year. According to the GVA, there has been an increase in shooting incidents and violence for three consecutive years after the 2019 Covid-19 pandemic. According to the statistics, there have been 272 shootings in 2014, 332 in 2015, 382 in 2016, 345 in 2017, 335 in 2018, 413 in 2019, 610 in 2021, 689 in 2021, 644 in 2022, 658 in 2023, 533 in 2024 and 53 by March 2025.

In America, there is a provision to keep and buy a gun after completing the minimum process. Most of them have guns in their homes, cars or with them. Due to this, the researcher speculates that shooting incidents are high. The BBC notes that murders are on the rise even as many states have largely lifted gun bans. In June 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the 'Permitless Carry Bill', allowing state residents to carry handguns without a license or training, according to the BBC. In Georgia, you can also carry a gun without a license or permit. Thus, Georgia is the 25th state in the US where you can carry or keep a gun without a permit.

According to GVA, the states with the highest crime rates in the US include the capital Washington DC, New Mexico, Louisiana, Colorado, South Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Washington, Tennessee, Oregon, Missouri, Alaska, Utah, Hawaii and Texas.
