Is it possible for Trump to become president for the third time?

Trump says there are ways to do this, I'm not kidding, a lot of people want to see it done, but I tell them - we have a lot of work to do, right now our government is in its infancy.

It has only been 10 weeks since Donald Trump began his second term as US President. But less than three months after assuming the office of the President, the interest and discussion about his third term has already started. Previously, Trump was the President of the United States for four years from 2017.

US politics has been rocked by Trump saying he wants to be president again, and that it's not a joke. In addition to that, discussions have also started on the legal arrangements regarding whether or not Trump can become president for a third term. The US Constitution states that no person can be elected president more than twice. "No person can be elected president more than twice," it is written in the constitution. But some of Trump's supporters said that a solution can be found in the constitutional system, BBC has mentioned.

In an interview with the American media NBC, Trump was asked about the topic of trying to enter the White House for the third time and its possibility. In response, Trump said that the possibility remains and that a solution can be found. There are some ways to do that.

I'm not kidding. A lot of people want to see me do that," Trump said, "but I tell them - we have a lot of work to do. Now our government is in the initial stage.'

Trump, currently 78 years old, will be 82 years old when his second term ends. Even at that age, when asked if Trump would be willing to hold the most difficult and responsible job in the country, Trump said that he would love to work. President Trump previously addressed his supporters last January and said that serving not just one term, but two or three or four terms would be the greatest achievement of his life. But soon after he claimed that he was joking for 'fake media'.

There is a clear provision in the US Constitution that no person can become president for the third time. "No person can be elected to the office of president more than twice," states the twenty-second amendment of the constitution, "Even if other people have been elected, no person who has held the office of president for more than two years or who has played the role of president can be elected to the office of president more than once." Amending the Constitution requires the support of two-thirds of both houses of the United States and three-fourths of all states. Although Trump's Republican Party has control of both houses, it does not have the majority required to amend the Constitution. Likewise, 18 of the 50 US state legislatures have a Democratic majority. But Trump's supporters say that there is a hole in the US Constitution and that question has not been raised in the court yet.

Although the twenty-second amendment of the US Constitution prohibits any person from being elected for more than two presidential terms, they argue that nothing is mentioned about the succession.

According to this, it seems that Trump can become the vice presidential candidate in the 2028 election. In that case, he would likely become the vice-presidential candidate if current vice-president J.D. Vance becomes the presidential candidate. If Vance wins the election, Trump will automatically win. But supporters claim that Vance will resign immediately after taking office and that Trump will succeed him and take over the duties of the president. President Trump's adviser and podcaster Steve Bannon says there is a possibility that Trump will rise and win the next election. He claims that it will be determined by one of two things. But he claims that he did not mention it in detail.

Andy Ogles, a member of parliament elected from Tennessee, made a proposal last January to amend the constitution so that no person can become president for a third consecutive term. If such an amendment is made, only Trump among the former presidents will be eligible to become president again. Trump, who was elected president in 2016, was defeated four years later. He was re-elected president in 2024. But Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush have been presidents for two consecutive terms. But due to the provisions of the constitution amendment, the proposal put forward by Ogles is unlikely to be passed at present.

Democrats have raised serious objections to the proposal. They say that Trump is going to make another move in an attempt to seize control of the government and destroy American democracy. Republicans have also opposed Trump's ambitions for a third term. Republican Senator Marquin Mullin said in February that he would not support such an effort by Trump. "I'm not in favor of changing the Constitution unless all the American people want it," Mullin told NBC.

Constitutional and election law experts also say that Trump's path to re-election as president is not easy. Derek Mueller, a professor of election law at the University of Notre Dame, says that according to the twenty-second amendment to the US Constitution, no person who is constitutionally ineligible for the office of president is eligible for the office of vice president. "I don't think there's any surprising trickery to be played with the presidential term provisions," he told the BBC. Likewise, Jeremy Pole, professor of constitutional law at Northeastern University in Boston, also says that according to the current provisions, it is not possible for any person to become president for the third time.

Before this, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president four times in America. But he died after three months of his fourth term in office. At that time, there was no constitutional provision in the US to limit the presidential term to two terms. But in 1796, when George Washington refused to run for president for a third time, that became the norm. But after his tenure, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was passed and the term limits of the US President were set.
