The death toll in an explosion at a firecracker factory and warehouse in Banaskantha, Gujarat state, India on Tuesday has reached 21. Indian media reported that five people were injured.
Most of the dead are industrial workers. In the incident at Deepak Traders in Disa Nagar, Banaskantha District of Gujarat State, it is said that some of the laborers' parts reached 50 meters away.
Some human parts have been found in the field behind the industry. The fire brigade took at least 6 hours to control the fire.
According to the police, it was reported that six people died in the incident. But after the fire was brought under control, the number of dead increased during the search. It is not yet known how many workers were present in the industry at the time of the incident.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been established. All the dead and injured in the accident belong to Handia village of Harda district of Madhya Pradesh. According to the information provided by the industry, those workers were brought to the industry only two days ago.
According to Deesa SDM Neha Panchal, all those injured in the incident have been admitted to the community hospital. The bodies of three people who are currently being treated have more than 40 percent burns. The administration is investigating the accident.
According to the preliminary investigation after the accident, it was found that the said industry only had permission to sell firecrackers but not to make them. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced compensation for the victims of the accident.
In India, such accidents are happening frequently because safety standards are neglected in firecracker factories and warehouses. According to Indian media, hundreds of people lose their lives every year in such incidents.
