US Vice President JD Vance has criticized Denmark for leaving Greenland vulnerable to attacks from China and Russia. According to the BBC, Vance, who reached the Greenland island during his visit, asked the Greenlanders to "come to terms" with the US.
Speaking during the visit, Vance did not repeat US President Donald Trump's recent statement of occupying the island by force. On the contrary, he asked the Greenlanders to break the 300-year-long relationship with Denmark. Vance claims that Denmark has not invested enough for the security of the self-governing island. But in a survey conducted last January, the majority of Greenlanders are against the merger of the island with other countries.
Vance's visit has been criticized by both Greenland and Denmark. The Prime Minister of Greenland responded that the American visit showed a "lack of respect". Similarly, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loke Rasmussen said that although he is open to criticism, its presentation is wrong. Rasmussen stated that the American military presence in Greenland has decreased from 17 bases in 1945 to one base with about 200 soldiers.
Earlier it was announced that Vance's wife Usha will spend a few days in Greenland and then visit the capital Nook and participate in cultural events such as the popular annual dog race. It was said that Vice President Vance will visit the US Pitufic Space Base Camp on the North-West Coast.
But with Greenland and Denmark upset, the tour schedule was changed. The White House of the US President said that Vance and Usha will spend only one day in Greenland to inspect the Pitufic space base camp. Denmark and Greenland welcomed the White House as they changed the tour schedule.
Vance and Usha, who were only a few hours in Greenland, visited the Pitufic space base camp, about 1500 kilometers from the capital Nook. In that sequence, he said that 'the people of Greenland should be protected from Russia, China and other countries'.
Vance tried to assure the people of Greenland that the United States would not use military force to take control of the island, according to the BBC. He urged Greenlanders to embrace self-determination and break ties with Denmark, which had controlled the region since 1721.
"We hope they will choose to partner with America, because we are the only nation on earth that will respect their sovereignty and respect their security," Vance said. "Their security is our security."
Vance says the US has no immediate plans to expand its military presence on the ground. But he said that more resources will be mobilized in the Navy.
'Our message to Denmark is very simple,' Vance said, 'You have not done a good job for the people of Greenland. You have under-invested in the people of Greenland and you have under-invested in the protection of this incredible, beautiful land.'
But Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said that Denmark is leaving no stone unturned for the safety of Greenland. She said that there has been a significant increase in defense spending and that she will further increase her investment with new arctic ships, long-range drones and satellite capabilities. "For many years, we have stood with the Americans in very difficult situations," she said, "We are always ready to cooperate with the Americans."
