At least 144 people were killed in a powerful earthquake in Myanmar on Friday, according to Myanmar's military government. Hundreds of people were injured in the earthquake. The BBC mentioned that the rescue team members said that the earthquake caused great human and material damage.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Sagaing city in Myanmar on Friday afternoon. A few minutes later, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the same area. According to the USGS, the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers below the surface of the ground.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 17 km from the city of Mandalay in Myanmar. This city has a population of about 1.5 million. According to eyewitnesses, at least 3 people died when a mosque collapsed in Taungu city, 2 people died and 20 were injured when a hotel collapsed in Aungban, according to Reuters. 

In 2021, the military overthrew power in Myanmar. The military government has been making strict disclosure of information inside the country. Due to this, the actual damage of the earthquake has not been made public. However, the head of Myanmar's military government, Min Aung Hlaing, reported 144 dead and 732 injured, the BBC noted. It is reported that 18 of the 96 people in Sagaing and 30 in Mandli have died in Naipei. 

Earthquake has killed 3 people in Myanmar's neighboring Thailand. 81 workers were trapped when a 30-story government office under construction collapsed in Bangkok. The building in the northern part of the Thai capital was destroyed in seconds. Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Petongtarn Shinawatra has declared a state of emergency. According to the Thai military, other buildings that collapsed in Bangkok were also under construction. Metro and train services are also stopped here. 

A resident of Yangon, a large city in Myanmar, told the BBC that he felt the tremors of the earthquake for about 4 minutes. "We came out of the house when everything started shaking," a Mandli resident told Reuters, "and saw a five-story building collapse before my eyes." Everyone is in panic. No one has been able to return home.' 

Earthquake has destroyed the streets of Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw and damaged buildings. A big bridge built over the river Irawji has also been destroyed. The quake was also felt in China's southwestern Yunnan province, according to Beijing's earthquake agency. The agency measured the tremor at 7.9 magnitude.

Meanwhile, Myanmar's military government has appealed for international support. The government has also informed that a state of emergency has been declared in six places in the country. Head of the military government Hulling visited the hospitals where the injured were kept and said that he hoped for the best possible support from other countries.
