In recent years, the number of students going out of Nepal to study is increasing. As the process of studying in foreign universities has become easier for Nepali students, most of them have chosen Australia, America, Canada and European countries.
According to statistics, the number of Nepali students in America has increased year by year. The number of Nepali students among international students studying in American universities is at the 10th place .
According to the data published by the Institute of International Education (IIE), currently 16 thousand 742 Nepali students are studying in various universities in the US at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This number is 1.5 percent of international students in the US . According to this number, Nepal ranks 10th among the countries that send students to America.
According to the data of IIE, India is on the first place . Currently there are 331 thousand 602 Indian students in America. In the second place are students from Brazil via China, followed by South Korea, Canada, Taiwan, Vietnam, Nigeria, and Bangladesh in the ninth place.
Chinese 277 thousand 398, Korean 43 thousand 149, Canadian 28 thousand 998, Taiwanese 23 thousand 157, Vietnamese 22 thousand 66, Nigerian 20 thousand 29, Bangladeshi 17 thousand 99 and Brazilian 16 thousand 8 hundred 77 are mentioned in the data. Currently, there are students from 100 countries in America.
According to the IIE report, the number of international students in the US has reached 1.1 million 30 by 2023/024. This number is seven percent more than the previous year. In the previous financial year, there were 1 million 50 thousand 900 international students.
In the previous year, the number of Nepali students reached 15 thousand 90. Based on this number, the number of Nepalese students ranked 12th in 2022/2023, after increasing by 10.9 percent in the last year 2023/2024, Nepal is ranked 10th among the countries of international students in America.
Similarly, according to the data of the last five years, the number of Nepali students in America is increasing every year. It reached 11 thousand 607 in 2016/017, 13 thousand 270 in 2017/018, and 13 thousand 299 in 2018/019. In 2019/2020, the number of Nepali students has decreased by 569 and this year it is 12 thousand 730.
The number of students coming from Nepal has also decreased in 2020/021. Compared to 2019/2020, it decreased by 1 thousand 558 and was limited to 11 thousand 172 . It seems that the number of Nepalese students, which has decreased for two financial years, has continuously increased since 2021/2022.
The number of students increased to 11 thousand 799 in the year 2021/022 and has reached 16 thousand 742. Out of these, 7 thousand 471 graduates, 5 thousand 882 are studying for postgraduates . According to IIE, 3,171 optional practical training (OPT) and 122 non-degree (non-degree) programs are participating.
In the last three months alone, 2,896 Nepali students have received US visas. From October to December 2024, those students received F-2 visas for American studies from the American Embassy in Kathmandu. 508 in October, 784 in November and 1604 in December are mentioned in the data.
This number has increased by 138 percent compared to the same period in 2023. From October to December of the previous fiscal year 2023, only 1,212 people got F2 visa. Of which there were 120 in October 2023, 477 in November and 615 in December. Dr. Bhoj Bahadur Balayer, professor of University of North Texas Denton, said that the number of Nepali students coming to America has increased in recent years due to America's flexible attitude towards Nepal and Nepali students, the increasing desire of Nepali students to go abroad, the higher level of educational certificates in America, more scholarships and more politics in Nepali universities.
"The number of Chinese students in American universities has been decreasing for a few years, and Nepali students have got an opportunity in that seat." If the policy of giving visas to Nepali students is not stricter, it can be assumed that the number will increase even more. According to
Professor Balyer, there are many Nepali students in Texas, New York, California, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. In recent years, he has prioritized nursing, IT, lab technician, bio mechanic, engineering and computer science studies for students coming from Nepal. Drop out among Nepali students is very low.
Although there is no definite data on how many Nepali students drop out, he claims that the number is less than 5 percent. He said that it can be assumed that the number is low because they only drop out due to reasons such as not being able to pay the university fees, falling into bad company and returning to Nepal without completing the course.
Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) National Coordinating Council of America President Dr. Arjun Banjade said that the increase in Nepali students will also increase the situation of them not getting a job. He claimed that recently, Nepali students are not getting jobs and they are changing universities, moving from one state to another state in search of work . Most of the Nepali students are employed by Nepalis.
There is a high risk of students not getting a job in a state where Nepali business firms are less. That's why the number of dropouts may increase due to lack of work," he said. According to President Banjade, more than 50,000 Nepalis in the US initially entered the country with student visas.
