Corruption case against Turkey's Istanbul mayor

A court on Sunday ordered the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of the Turkish city of Istanbul, and to keep him in prison until the case related to corruption charges is resolved.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main opponent and leader of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Imamoglu prepared to challenge Erdogan in the upcoming presidential election.

Imamoglu, a rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was detained on Wednesday, a few days before he was selected as the 2028 presidential candidate.

Imamoglu has been denying the allegations against him. After his arrest, his supporters protested for four nights, the largest protest seen in Turkey in a decade.

Erdogan condemned the protests, accusing Imamoglu's opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) of trying to "disrupt the peace and polarize the people".

Tear gas was fired in the air in Istanbul on Saturday before the protest started outside the mayor's office. As the evening wore on, as the crowd grew, dozens of tear gas shells were fired to disperse the protesters, making it difficult to breathe.

People of all ages chanted slogans of 'rights, law and justice' and rejected the ban imposed by the government to protest illegal detention.
