US President Donald Trump has dismissed the chairman of the 'Joint Chief of Staff' as part of a major reshuffle in the top military leadership. Trump has unexpectedly fired Chief of Staff Chairman Charles Q. Brown Jr.
'I want to thank General Charles Q. Brown for his more than 40 years of service to our country,' Trump wrote on social media. According to the BBC, he said that five other high-ranking military officers have also been transferred.
In America, the Joint Chiefs of Staff advises the President and the Defense Minister on national security. Brown is the second black officer to hold the position. Colin Powell was the first black Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving for four years from 1989.
Earlier, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said General Brown should be fired because of his focus on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the military. Also, Hegseth announced the firing of two additional senior military officers. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti and Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Jim Slife were targeted by Hegseth. Franchetti is the first woman to head the US Navy .
All three top officials fired on Friday were appointed by Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden. "Under President Trump, we will elect new leadership who will focus our military on its core mission of deterring, fighting and winning wars," Hegseth said in a statement.
Trump recently announced that Air Force Lt. Col. Dan Cain, who served as the CIA's assistant director, would make Cain the new chairman of the Chief of Staff. Last year, during the 'Conservative Political Action Conference', Trump recalled his first meeting with Col. Cain in Iraq. "He looked better than any movie actor you'll ever get," Trump said. In the same speech, he praised the US Army .
General Brown was on a military visit to the southern US border on Friday, nearly two hours before Trump announced his departure. Although his tenure will end in 2027, there were rumors that Trump was going to remove Brown for a few days.
In 2020, Jarnell Brown was in the news due to his expression after the death of George Floyd, a black American. While serving as Air Force chief of staff in 2022, Brown signed a diversity program to increase the proportion of black minorities.
