The telephone conversation between the presidents of the US and Russia about ending the Russia-Ukraine war has created a big wave in Europe. American President Donald Trump mentioned on his social network Truth Social on Thursday that he had a long and very productive telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
Trump said that in the talks with Putin, an agreement has been reached to immediately start talks to end the war in Ukraine. He said that both countries will start talks to end the war in Ukraine. During the conversation, both presidents have also invited each other to visit their respective countries.
Russian President Putin invited Trump for a visit to Moscow, according to Dmitry Peskov, spokesman of the Russian Presidential Office Kremlin. Although Trump did not mention anything about the date of the meeting with Putin, he said that the meeting will be in Saudi Arabia .
Speaking to reporters at the President's White House after talks with Putin, Trump said that if the talks are concluded, Ukraine may not be a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and may not get back all the territory it lost during the war.
'I'm trying to make peace,' President Trump said, 'I want to stop killing millions of people . Other than that I don't care about anything else .' Although there is no possibility that Ukraine will return to its borders as before 2014, Trump says that some land will be returned.
'We both agree that we want to stop millions of deaths in the Russia-Ukraine war,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. Kremlin spokesman Peskov also said that Putin supports Trump's idea that it is time to work together.
Peskov accused former US President Joe Biden's administration of taking all measures to continue the Ukraine war and prevent Russia-US relations from getting closer.
Trump said he and Putin have agreed on a plan to work more closely together from visiting each other's countries. A US president has not visited Russia since 2009 and a Russian president has not visited the US since 2015.
With Trump's statement about the telephone conversation between the two leaders becoming public, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said that he had a conversation with Trump on the issue of long-term and reliable peace.
Zelensky said that he had a very meaningful conversation on the phone with Trump. "There is no one who wants peace more than Ukraine," Zelensky said.
Trump says Zelensky will meet with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday in talks on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
Previously, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Ukraine is less likely to join NATO. During the NATO defense ministers' meeting held in Belgium, Hegseth said that Ukraine must accept that all the land occupied by Russia cannot be returned. "We have to accept that trying to go back to pre-2014 is impossible," Hegseth said. Pursuing such a goal will prolong the war and cause more suffering, he said.
But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that his country will not accept any peace agreement between the US and Russia without the involvement of his country. Zelensky says that everything should not be allowed to go according to Putin's plan .
'I don't think the talks between Trump and Putin were based on Russian priorities. But I don't think it went well. Because there can be nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,' Zelensky said. He said that there was no discussion about NATO in his telephone conversation with Trump.
Similarly, the UK has also stated that there will be no talks on Ukraine without the involvement of Ukraine. British Defense Minister John Haley, who arrived in Belgium to participate in the meeting of NATO's defense ministers, said that the participation of the Ukrainian side in any talks about Ukraine is mandatory.
'There can be no talks about Ukraine without Ukraine,' he said. Haley's response has been made public after it became public that there was a telephone conversation between the presidents of the United States and Russia about ending the Ukraine war. Responding to Trump's statement, Haley said, 'NATO's job is to put Ukraine in the strongest position for any negotiation.'
He says that there will be a new announcement to support Ukraine through NATO. 'We want lasting peace . "We don't want to return to conflict and aggression," he said, "and let's not forget that Russia is a threat beyond Ukraine."
According to BBC, the meeting of NATO foreign ministers has agreed to strengthen the support given to Ukraine. Poland's Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamisz has said that there is agreement on the plan to increase NATO's 'Rapid Response Force'.
According to NATO's website, the Rapid Response Force is a technologically advanced and immediate response force comprising land, sea and air forces. According to Kamisz, this force will strengthen NATO's ability to defend the eastern part of NATO, including Poland.
Similarly, NATO chief Mark Rutte has said that he will continue to support Ukraine. He says that NATO is working to keep Ukraine in a strong position on the battle front and to make the outcome of the negotiations in its favor. "The outcome of any negotiations must be sustainable and strong, so that Putin never tries to seize Ukrainian land again," he said.
Noting that NATO has provided more than 50 billion euros of military assistance to Ukraine, he said that a joint command structure has been built between Ukraine and NATO. He says that NATO has learned something from the Ukraine case.
Likewise, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has also disagreed with US President Trump's statement. He suggested that it would be better to do everything at the negotiation table . "In my opinion, it would have been better to talk at the negotiating table about Ukraine's possible NATO membership or possible loss of territory," he said. French Foreign Minister Sebastien Lecornu has also said that the option of 'peace through strength' is not appropriate.
