Tensions rise in Gaza amid cease-fire initiative

The war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, which has been at war for fifteen months, has flared up again. At least 200 people have been killed in the attack by the Israeli army (IDF) in the Gaza Strip in the last three days. It is said that most of the dead were women and children and dozens were injured.

According to Hamas officials, the IDF conducted at least 100 airstrikes and shelling of residential areas in Gaza in three days. A Hamas official says the IDF carried out "dangerous and brutal" attacks on unarmed civilians and residential areas.

After the Palestinian group Hamas attacked northern Israel on October 7, 2023, the war between the two sides started . At least 1200 people died in the attack. In addition, Hamas took about 250 hostages. 96 of them are still under the control of Hamas.

More than 45 thousand Palestinians have died due to the war. More than one third of the dead are children. According to Palestinian officials, the number of children killed since October 7 has exceeded 18,000.

Between the two sides, efforts are being made for a ceasefire agreement with the mediation of America, Qatar and Egypt for a few weeks. It was said that the talks in Doha, Qatar and Cairo, Egypt are about to reach an agreement.

Negotiations for a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages by Hamas have already started last Friday. The Israeli team reached Qatar on Friday for talks. According to the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, the team includes representatives of the Israel Security Agency (ISA), the IDF and the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.

Hamas has also said that the ceasefire talks have resumed since Friday and that they are serious about reaching an agreement. "We are as serious and positive as ever in our efforts to quickly reach an agreement that achieves the goals of the people's aspirations," Hamas said in a statement.

According to Hamas, the latest round of talks will focus on 'a complete cease-fire, the withdrawal of troops from the Gaza Strip and details of implementation and the return of displaced persons home. .

The cease-fire agreement will focus on the proposal put forward by US President Joe Biden, according to CNN. In the proposal put forward by the Biden administration, it was stated that there would be a 'full ceasefire' in Gaza and the release of the hostages.  Tensions rise in Gaza amid cease-fire initiative

Hamas said in a meeting held in Cairo, Egypt that the two sides have reached 90 percent agreement on the ceasefire. The ceasefire agreement was said to be in three stages. In the first phase, it was stated that 20 Palestinian prisoners would be exchanged for every female soldier to be released.

The names of the prisoners have yet to be agreed upon, but will be chosen from about 400 people serving 25 years or more in Israel . It is said that the Israeli hostages will be released in different stages.

Similarly, in the second phase, civilians in the northern Gaza Strip will be allowed to return home under the monitoring system of Egypt and Qatar. It is also said that around 500 trucks will deliver aid materials to those areas every day. In the final phase, the 14-month-long war will end and the Gaza region will be inspected by a committee of experts who have no previous political affiliation.

Earlier, Hamas officials said that there is still an agreement on some issues. In particular, the IDF presence in the Philadelphia Corridor has yet to be agreed upon. The Philadelphia Corridor is a strategically important strip of land bordering Egypt and southern Gaza. Currently, the area is under the control of the IDF.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stated that he does not want to withdraw the IDF from the Philadelphia corridor. Israeli officials have also said that the military presence in the area will continue . Likewise, the issue of the governance of Gaza after the war has not been decided. Even in the Palestinian leadership, there is no consensus on this .  Qatar, which is mediating

, has not formally mentioned anything about the latest talks. But with the recent attacks of Israel, there is concern that the atmosphere of negotiations will be disrupted. More than 200 civilians have been killed especially in the last three days of attacks. 88 of them were killed on Sunday.

In addition, US President Joe Biden has put forward a plan to sell arms worth 8 billion US dollars to Israel as he leaves power. According to BBC, Biden has already informed the parliament about it. But the sale of those weapons requires the approval of the committees of the US Parliament. The weapons to be sent to Israel include missiles, ammunition and other weapons.

Biden is leaving power after January 15. After that, Donald Trump will take over the post of American president. Due to the Israeli attack, thousands of civilians have been killed in Gaza, and the pressure is increasing on the US not to provide military aid to Israel. But the Biden administration has been ignoring it.

President Biden has repeatedly reiterated America's support for Israel. America has been supplying most of the weapons and modern equipment to Israel. 69 percent of the weapons used by Israel from 2019 to 2023 were provided by the US.

Trump, who will become president in two weeks, is more likely to stop the plans put forward by the Biden administration. Trump has been saying that he will reduce American involvement in foreign conflicts. However, Trump has been seen as supportive of Israel. But he has said that the war in Gaza should end immediately.

Recently, with the cease-fire between Israel and the Lebanese organization Hezbollah, Hamas is also under pressure. A ceasefire agreement was signed between the two sides on November 27. Hezbollah has been helping Hamas in the war against Israel.

The US-brokered ceasefire agreement states that Israeli forces will withdraw from Lebanon within 60 days. Similarly, Israel and Hezbollah have been given two months to remove their fighters and weapons from the area within about 30 kilometers of the 'Blue Line', the unofficial border between Lebanon and Israel, and the Litani River.

But Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has accused Hezbollah of not fulfilling the terms of the ceasefire. Al Jazeera reports that Israel has warned that Israel will be 'forced to take action' if Katzalde Hezbollah continues to violate the agreement.

Katz says Hezbollah fighters still haven't retreated from the Litani River area in southern Lebanon. "If this condition is not met, there will be no deal and Israel will be forced to take action to allow the residents of the northern region to return safely to their homes," he said. According to the cease-fire agreement, the IDF must withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 26.
