Suchir Balaji, who questioned OpenAI, was found dead

Former OpenAI employee and researcher Suchir Balaji was found dead in his apartment. Balaji, a 26-year-old American citizen of Indian origin, was found dead in an apartment in the Lower Heights area of San Francisco. The head of the medical examination office there has confirmed that his death was due to suicide.

Elon Musk, the founder of OpenAI and now a bitter critic, posted on his platform X indirectly questioning the news of Balaji's death.

Balaji came into the limelight from October this year . He claimed that OpenAI illegally and unethically uses copyrighted material to train artificial intelligence (AI) models like ChatGPT. He publicly criticized Sam Altman saying that the company was using content illegally without permission from the creator.

Last October, through an article published in The New York Times, Balaji questioned OpenAI's practice. His disclosure caused a complex controversy in the technology sector and legal cases were also filed against OpenAI. Various media and organizers are also giving legal challenges expressing dissatisfaction with OpenAI's large language model.

In an article based on a conversation with The New York Times, Balaji said that he resigned last August citing work pressure and dissatisfaction with OpenAI's working style. 'If you believe me, leave the company like I did, I am clear that this model is not dynamic for the entire Internet sector .'

Recently, Balaji said that he was under pressure due to the bitterness and legal entanglement with OpenAI. His friends and colleagues informed the police after not being able to contact him for the last few days. After the police arrived at the scene, it was concluded that he had committed suicide. Later, the medical examiner's office officially declared his death as a suicide.

OpenAI has expressed deep sorrow over Balaji's death and expressed condolences to his family and friends. The company is also committed to taking the ethical and legal challenges associated with AI development seriously .  Before Balaji started working at OPAI in 2019, he was associated with leading technology companies like Scale AI, Helia, Cora.
