The Alliance of Opposition Parties of India (India) is going to bring a no-confidence motion against the Speaker of the Upper House, Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhad. General Secretary of Indian Congress and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh has informed through social media X that he has submitted a motion of no confidence to the General Secretary of Rajya Sabha.
Ramesh wrote, 'Due to the highly biased manner in which the upper house was run by the Honorable Speaker of the Rajya Sabha, there was no option to bring a formal no-confidence motion against him before all the constituent parties of the India Group.'
Congress General Secretary Ramesh has also said that the India Alliance was forced to take a very difficult decision. He writes, '...but for the sake of parliamentary democracy, this unprecedented step has to be taken . We have submitted this proposal to the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha.'
The ex-officio Speaker of the Indian Upper House Rajya Sabha is the Vice President. The Rajya Sabha also elects a Deputy Speaker from among its members. At least 14 days written notice must be given to the members of either House (Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha) to remove the Vice President. The notice should clearly state the reasons for the removal of the Vice President.
The opposition parties have accused Speaker Dhankhad of biased behavior in Monday's Rajya Sabha meeting.
