As the war between Israel and Hezbollah escalated, 12 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union, called for a temporary ceasefire in Lebanon.
They stated that a three-week-long ceasefire would provide space for a diplomatic solution to end the conflict and that a ceasefire in Gaza would be possible. In a joint statement issued by the 12 countries, they said that the hostilities are intolerable and that the continued risk in the border area is not in the interest of the people of Israel or Lebanon.
Israeli army chief Harji Halevi said after the fierce attack on Lebanon that they could pave the way for them to enter the enemy's territory. The statement was released after the meeting of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The
statement was signed by the US, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and Qatar.
American President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron issued a separate joint statement saying that the ceasefire will pave the way for civilians in war-torn areas to return home and provide security. They say the current hostilities will lead to much wider conflict and civilian casualties.
Israel continues to attack southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region. The Israeli army said on Wednesday night that Hezbollah targeted 75 locations. At least 13 people died in those attacks, according to the Ministry of Health of Lebanon.
Along with this, the number of people who lost their lives in air strikes by Israel since Monday has exceeded 600 . More than 100 women and children are killed. It is said that at least 1800 people were injured. Tens of thousands have been displaced from southern Lebanon due to the attack.
Since the war in Gaza started on October 7 last year, cross-border attacks between Israel and Hezbollah have continued. Although some Hezbollah fighters were killed in such attacks, the number of civilian casualties is also significant.
Last week, 37 people died and at least 3,500 were injured in the explosion of pagers and walkie-talkies used by the Hezbollah group for communication.
Hizbullah said that Israel was responsible for the explosion and warned that it would take revenge for the incident. But Israel has not responded to that.
Likewise, Hezbollah's top military commander Ibrahim Akil was killed in an air strike by Israel on Friday in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Earlier in 2006, 1100 soldiers and 45 civilians were killed in Lebanon and 119 soldiers and 45 civilians in a month-long war between Hezbollah and Israel.
