A scene captured on a CCTV camera inside a classroom in a school in Janakpur is currently going viral on social media.
In the scene, a student is seen assaulting a teacher. When the teacher tries to hit a student with a pencil, the student punches the teacher instead. There are other things in the scene that few people have talked about. What was this incident? What is the scene seen in the video? Kantipur has prepared material on this:
The incident took place at St. Xavier's High School in Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-4. The school administration has stated that the student assaulted the teacher when the teacher tried to hit him with a pencil for not doing his homework. The school administration claims that the incident occurred while the teacher was reminding the student for not doing his homework despite repeated reminders.
No complaint has been filed with the police yet regarding this incident. The school administration has stated that efforts are being made to call both the parties and hold a discussion about the incident. When Kantipur tried to understand this with the officials of Janakpurdham Sub-metropolitan City, the officials who came in contact said that they were not aware of it. The administration also said that this incident happened some time ago and the footage was leaked after the CCTV camera was hacked. The school administration official also said that they cannot say anything now as they have filed a complaint with the Cyber Bureau of the police regarding the CCTV hacking.
A senior police officer in the district informed that they came to know about this from social media and that no complaint has been received. The officer said that efforts are being made to investigate this through his mechanism. In particular, in this incident, it is seen that the student assaulted the teacher. It is also seen that the student was made to stand up in the classroom and held his ears as punishment. Yes, many people are not interested, but this is also a serious issue.
A few days ago, a CCTV video of a scuffle between a teacher and a student at St. Xavier's High School in Janakpur has raised many questions. In the video, the teacher is seen trying to raise her hand and the student is seen hitting the teacher. How did this kind of incident happen? How should the teacher behave with the students and how did this kind of attitude develop in the students? Many questions have been raised about how the CCTV will affect other students in the school.
Kantipur has spoken to experts and psychologists in the education sector about the psychosocial aspects of this incident. According to the CCTV footage of St. Xavier's High School in Janakpur, this incident took place at 2:19 pm on Jestha 26. In the video, the teacher initially appears to be standing up and saying something to a student and waving her hand. The student immediately attacks the teacher and another student tries to separate them. When watching the video, some students are seen standing in a corner of the classroom with their ears covered.
This incident has created many questions and debates. ‘What should be the treatment of students in schools, the teaching and learning method? How did a situation arise where a student attacks a teacher?’ The question has been raised. If it is wrong for a teacher to beat or punish a student, whether for not doing homework or for other reasons, private school administrators say that it is even worse for a student to attack a teacher,’ says Rabin Sharma, vice-president of PABSON.
Every student should be taught what makes a student happy, what is his interest in, and after the teacher has studied the student, he should make a plan on how to conduct the class again according to his interests and desires. He said that teachers should not be beaten with sticks for not doing their homework in the classroom. He says, ‘That is wrong. We cannot support that.’
We have also asked psychologists about this incident. According to them, when students are taught by exerting physical or psychological pressure, they not only do not pay attention, but also do not want to learn. This not only makes teaching and learning ineffective, but also creates anger and resentment in the students towards the teacher and affects them psychologically. When children are forcibly taught, their interest in studying decreases and, on the contrary, anger, resentment, and prejudice develop towards the teacher concerned, says psychologist Padamprasad Ghimire.
He says, ‘If teachers understand their mindset and teach instead of forcing them to teach like this, great progress can be made.’ Watching the video, it is seen that some students are made to stand in a corner of the classroom by holding their ears. Education experts say that when students are punished in this way, negativity increases and even leads to dropping out of school. Education experts say that students cannot be disciplined by punishing them, and that incidents of beating are unjustified and actionable, says Nim Prakash Singh Rathore, Director of the Education and Human Resource Development Center.
Even though CCTV is installed in the classroom to monitor students, psychologists say that it is wrong to bring out the video of such incidents. Ghimire says that this creates negativity towards school teachers and students. He said, ‘We should resolve such incidents in schools and never make them public.’
This will inspire negative thinking teenagers and there is a risk that they will repeat such incidents and go viral, says Sharma, vice-president of PABSON. He says, ‘It is also wrong to come through the media after an incident has happened. Such a message can also improve many school teachers. And in some places, students may even think that they will beat up teachers. In some places, teachers may understand that they will have to beat them up again with sticks. This incident also has a psychological impact on students or teachers in other schools.’
According to a UN report, although punishment of students in schools is illegal in most countries of the world, it is still legal in 63 countries. This includes about 793 million children. According to the Ministry of Education, there were many incidents of teachers punishing students until a few years ago, but now there has been a significant decrease. Such incidents should not be allowed to happen again. And there should be a serious study of how the situation arose that led to the incident. Also, the traditional teaching and learning methods should be reviewed.
