Deepak Rauniar is one such director, who for the first time took Nepali films to major film festivals in the world. The film Highway (2012) directed by him was premiered at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival. The film was also shown at the Locarno Film Festival.
In 2016, he directed 'White Sun', which was chosen for the Orizonti category of Venice and was shown at various international festivals in Locarno, Toronto, and Rotrodram.
His latest film 'Rajaganj' was also selected in Venice. This film is shown in the world market under the title 'Pooja Sir'. Director Rauniar discusses his three feature films as a 'triology'. Rauniar, who directed the short film 'Chowkathi', makes films on various social issues. His films cover the complex issues of Madhes, women and society.
Rauniar's films, which present such complex aspects of society in a simple manner, are also empowered by political aspects. 'Highway, Seto Surya and Rajaganj were interrelated films, it was a trilogy in particular. Now this trilogy is complete,' Rauniyar said. The impact of the closure on the highway was shown. Similarly, there was a Maoist conflict in White Sun, Madhes movement in Rajaganj.
While telling the story of various characters of the society, director Rauniyar made the film by keeping these aspects in the background. Director Rauniar is currently making a film on master chef Santosh Shah.
