Nepal's Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) is one of the longest and most challenging treks in the world and is popular among tourists and businessmen around the world. 12 Nepalese women have participated in this 1700 km long route starting from Taplejung in Koshi Province and ending in Darchula in Far West Province, the head of 17 Himalayan districts under the leadership of Maya Gurung, a climber of Sindhupalcho.
Maya Gurung, who led the trek that started on the eve of International Women's Day 2025, is a member of the first inclusive women's Everest climbing team organized in 2008. Shanti Thing Tamang, Sangita Vishwakarma, Dipa Lamichhane, Ranjita Lama, Varsha Bik, Saraswati Tamang, Shrishti Tamang, Anisha Shrestha, Sangeeta Tamang, Pramita Sapkota and Manmaya Tamang from Sindhupalchok are also on this adventure. Among these women aged between 19 and 45 years, Shanti is the mother of only one child.
Maya said that one of the main objectives of this walk is to encourage Nepalese women to participate in tourism business including mountain climbing and adventure trekking. All the women who went on the trek are mountain guides and trekking guides by profession. Manmaya is a communicator.
They have said that they are going to organize this program by raising their own expenses in this walk, which also aims to introduce Nepal to the world. "We have estimated that this trek of around 100 days will cost around one and a half million rupees," said Maya, who is known as Himal's daughter. We are all collecting this amount by ourselves.
About 20 additional porters and a team are participating to help these women. 62-year-old Sunder Kumar Chaudhary of Dang Ghar is also participating in the walk. Those who are participating in the trek to prepare for climbing Mount Everest next year.
This team, which treks to a height of 6100 meters, has divided the trekking route into 10 glaciers from East Taplejung to West Darchula. Each section is led by 12 people. The team leader is changing in every section. Interest has been expressed from various areas to walk with us in this section. We have welcomed those who want to walk from outside.'
