US President Donald Trump, who is visiting China after nearly nine years, is also including top executives from more than a dozen major US companies, Reuters reported, citing the White House. The visiting delegation, which will begin on Wednesday, includes the world's richest man and Trump's friend Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Boeing CEO Kelly Ottberg, as well as top executives and businessmen from other major US companies, according to media reports.
The visit, which was previously scheduled but postponed due to tensions in West Asia, will last until Friday. US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet on Thursday. During the visit, discussions and announcements are scheduled to be made on various issues ranging from bilateral trade, mutual investment, tensions with Iran, nuclear weapons to the management of artificial intelligence (AI), CNBC reported.
China is expected to announce purchases of nearly 500 large Boeing aircraft, as well as agricultural, energy, semiconductor and other US technology products. The trip is also expected to discuss rare earth minerals and feature a CEO forum where the heads of major US companies will announce additional investments in China.
Other top business executives who will accompany Trump on the trip to China include Meta's Dina Powell, BlackRock's Larry Fink, BlackRock's Stephen Schwarzman, Micron's Sanjay Mahorotra, Mastercard's Michael Miback, Qualcomm's Cristiano Ammon, Visa's Ryan McEnroe, Cargill's Brian Sykes, Coherent's Jim Anderson and Illumina's Jacob Thyssen, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Reuters reported. The BBC reported that Nvidia chief Janssen Huang is expected to be among the key names in the delegation, but has not been invited. After the formal meeting between Trump and Xi on Thursday, the US and China are scheduled to announce trade and investment boards. International media outlets claim that in addition to reducing technological tensions between the two countries, global security issues such as AI will also be discussed and announced.
Trump, who likes to give significant importance to the heads of large companies on his official visits, also took about 29 heads of large companies on his 2017 visit to China. With rising geopolitical tensions and the two countries competing in AI technology, Trump has announced aggressive restrictions such as tariffs in his second term. The upcoming visit is being watched with great interest by the business community around the world.
