The government has started shutting down illegal betting apps and websites. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has stated that about 261 betting apps have been shut down so far.

The Ministry of Communications was instructed to shut down betting apps and related websites within 24 hours under the 100 agenda for governance reforms approved by the Council of Ministers on Saturday. Ministry spokesperson Uday Bahadur Rana informed that about 261 betting apps have been shut down so far and the search for other such apps is ongoing.

According to spokesperson Rana, the government is continuing to search for such apps and websites and shut them down. The ministry had written a letter to the Telecommunications Authority on Sunday itself and directed it to shut down such illegal apps.

Authority spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal informed that instructions were sent to all mobile and internet service providers to shut down such apps and websites immediately after receiving the letter from the ministry. According to him, the authority has called all internet service providers on Monday and reviewed the progress of implementation. Aryal mentioned that while closing such apps, there is a challenge to be careful so that other essential sites are not closed.

Online betting apps like OneX Bet, Crixbet, and Melbet were seen operating in Nepal.
